Son derece ayrıntılı araştırmaların sonucu olarak ortaya çıkan elinizdeki kitap, varolan bütün Kant biyografilerini eleştirel bir süzgeçten geçirip Kant'ın hayatı hakkındaki birçok miti yıkarak bu bilinçli yaratıyı çözümlemekte ve onun yaşamıyla felsefi eserlerinin anlamlı ve detaylı bir sentezini yapmaktadır.Kant felsefesi, Rönesans'tan sonraki Avrupa felsefesi için bir kavşak noktasıdır. Bu felsefe hem Rönesans sonrası tüm gelişmelerin ana çizgilerini bir derleyici edasıyla kendinde taşır, hem de kendisinden sonraki Avrupa felsefesi için kaynak işlevi görür. Getirdiği yeni çözümsel denemelerle, 19.yüzyılın ilk yarısında özellikle Fichte, Schelling, Hegel ve kısmen Schopenhauer ile bütünlük kazanan Alman idealizminin sarsılmaz bir sistem yaratma tutkusunun kurucusudur. Felsefesinin bilgi yönünü, duyarlık olmadan hiçbir nesne bize verili olamaz, anlak olmadan da hiçbir nesne düşünülemez.
