Bu yolculukta bütün hiyerarşisi ve adetleriyle Rus toplumunun farklı katmanlarından insanların; tüccarların, din adamlarının, köylülerin, işçilerin ve arabacıların arasına karışır. Bozkırda doğal akışında sürüp giden yaşamın çocuğun duyuları ve duyguları üzerinde bıraktığı etkiler, Çehov'un ustaca ete kemiğe büründürdüğü belalı Dımov'a karşı beslediği düşmanlık, dalgalanan ruh halleri şaşırtıcı ölçüde gerçekçi bir üslupla aktarılır. Rus yaşam biçiminin ve ruhunun canlı imgelerini gözümüzün önüne getiren şiirli bir dille tasvir edilen bozkır, renkleri, sesleri ve kokularıyla hikayenin ana karakterlerinden biridir adeta. Üzerinde yolculuk eden insanlardan bağımsız, kendi yaşamını sürer, soluk alıp verir. Çehov bozkırla insan varoluşu arasındaki paralellikler aracılığıyla doğayla insan arasında simbiyotik bir ilişki kurmuştur.ANTON PAVLOVİÇ ÇEHOV (1860-1904): Büyük Rus tiyatro yazarı ve modern öykünün en önemli ustalarından olan Çehov, Rus edebiyatında gerçekçilikten modernizme geçişi temsil eder.
